To Kill a Mockingbird

After reading the book and watching the movie of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, You have to do the following tasks:

  • write about the part of the book that you liked the most. Why did you like it? Give specific examples from the book.
  • There are three major themes in the book: injustice, education and bravery. Give examples in which we can clearly identify these themes.
  • You have to write an essay about one of the following question.:
  1. Discuss the concept of fear as presented in the book. Compare the children's early fear of Boo Radley to their fear or lack thereof when Bob Ewell attacks them. Is Scout correct in stating that real fear can only be found in books?
  2. trade Boo Radley's development from monster to savior. How does Scout understanding of Boo develop? What lesson does Boo teach Scout?
  3. Although criticized openly, Atticus is respected throughout the town of Maycomb. Why is this true?

  2. 1-My favorite part of the book is when children begin to realize that Boo is not a monster or a ghost and they begin to have a communication through the knot –hole, and when the time passes they are given account that Boo is better inside of his house alone, Instead of being out with so many bad people. Example: “Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time. It's because he wants to stay inside.'" Page 227
2-Injustice: It is a central theme in this novel related with the racism because Atticus loses the trial defending Tom, even though Tom Robinson is innocent he goes to jail, and everything is because a white man is against to a black man and in the novel a white man never loses.
Education: Atticus as good father gives to his children the best sense of morality and education. Example: Atticus has taught to read and write to his daughter before she goes to his first year of school.
Bravery: Many of the characters in the novel demonstrate courage, but the greatest form of value comes from Atticus and his children, because they are brave to defend a black man no matter how the whole community is against them.

  3. 1) My favorite part is when the guys try to overcome their fear toward Boo Radley. I like that part because is something that has happened to all of us when we were children. They were always challenging each other to go to the house to look for Boo; they thought he was a kind of monster or ghost, but at the end they realized that they could not judge a person without knowing about him. I enjoyed the way the author described the life in a small town and the way she pictured the adventures of those three children. I think it made us remember the days of our own childhood.
    2) INJUSTICE: When Tom Robinson was convicted for something he had not done. Although Atticus demonstrated Tom Robinson's innocence, they treated him like if he were guilty. That was not fair.
EDUCATION: This part resulted interesting to me because I'm studying that. It's interesting the way the author pictures the educational system of that epoch. It show us that education on that period was teacher centered. When Scout showed that she was able to read, the teacher forbade her to do it because she (the teacher) was the responsible to provide the students with learning.
BRAVERY: This was demonstrated particularly by Scout, Jem, and Atticus. Jem and Scout were always willing to help their father in whatever thing he needed; they were always by his side. Atticus was a complete gentleman. He was a complete professional because he did not care that all the people in the town critizised him when he defended Tom. He tried to live a quiet life, but when he had to defend and protect the people he loved, he did it bravely.

  4. 1) My favourite part is when Children are going to the school party and then to their house; Jem is taking care of Scout. I like this part because even they are always fighting and Jem doesn’t like to have Scout behind him all the time he defends her because she is his sister and his protection shows his love for her.

    2) Injustice, education, and bravery:

Injustice: The biggest injustice is about Tom Robinson; he is accused of rape Mayella Ewell. Mayella says Tom Robinson used to help her to chop the chiffarobe up but one day he hit her and took advantage of her. Tom Robinson says Mayela asked him to enter into her fence to help her with some stuff; suddenly she hugged him by his hip and he rejected her. While he was trying to separate her from his body Mr. Ewell appeared at the window and Mr. Ewell thought Tom Robinson was taking advantage from his daughter....Tom run away because of fear; fear to being killed by something he didn’t do! But anyway in the courthouse Tom Robinson is dictated as deal!! Mr. Ewell kills Tom Robinson when he is escaping the jail.

Education: Mr. Atticus is the Dad who wants his son and his daughter to know more about education, literature and of course about values. Mr. Atticus teaches Jem and Scout to read. Atticus´ father taught Calpurnia to read.
Atticus in a subtly way passes on wisdom to his children about taboo subjects like racism. For example when he explains to Scout what nigger- love is. Page 124.

Bravery: Many characters show bravery but the most shown is Atticus´ for example he doesn´t be afraid to defend Robinson; he doesn’t feel any scar from Mr. Ewell...
Jem and Scout show all the time a lot of bravery because they are always thinking in the right things that should be and that is the reason why they want to know more about how to help others for example They want to make Boo Radley goes out; they make many crazy things to achieve this.... Scout faces and fights with classmates and even with adults to defend Atticus.... And Jem defends Scout from Mr. Ewell then Mr. Boo appears and save the children from Mr. Ewell...

  5. 1) The part of the book I like the most was when the kids were rescued by Boo Radley. I liked that part because it was a big surprise for them. They had feared Boo since the beginning of the story; and almost at the end, they realized that Boo was a simple person like them. I learned a lot from that. Sometimes we judge a person only because we have heard runors about that person, but when we know by ourselves things become different. Stereotyping is not a good way to judge.

    2) Injustice: It is demonstrated when poor Tom Robinson is judged unfairly. Apparently, people in that period of history felt some kind of dislike toward black people. There were no enough evidence to convict Tom, but they did it anyway.
Education: This is showed when Scout goes to school the first day. We find in the story an old system of education in which teachers had all the power in the classroom; they were omniscient and students had to learn at teacher's pace.
Bravery: I noticed that in the kids. Although they feared Boo and the Radley's house, they had the necessary courage to go and help their father when he needed. Scout did not seem to be only a little girl because she was able to act with enough maturity in some cases.

  6. 1) The part I liked the most was when Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson because he does not care that he is a black man. Atticus agrees to defend him because he knows he is innocent and people are judging him just for his color skin. He tries to implement a new way of thinking in Maycomb people. I really liked this Atticus´ action because trough it he teaches everyone a truly lesson. He see all humankind as similar and tries to defend what is right and wrong not paying attention about what people think or say about him. In the book you can noticed this when he agrees to accept the case even when he knew he will lose, during the whole trial when he defends Robinson presenting proves of his innocence, and when people call him “Nigger Lover”.

2)INJUSTICE: Injustice is presented two important times in the book: 1) When the community and special the children make see Boo as a psycho. No one knows the real situation about Boo, but they criticize him.
    2) When the jury of whites declares Robinson guilty after the presentation of important proves of his innocence. Atticus proved that Robinson was innocent indeed, but they declared him guilty because they thought all black people were criminals.

EDUCATION: This theme can be seemed in two different ways: First the Education that Atticus and his children present when they defend what is right according to their moral education. Second: The importance of moral education in the people of Maycomb who reject black people.

BRAVERY: You can clearly see bravery in the children because they try to overcome their fear toward Boo and when they defend their father against the bad things people say about him for defending Robinson. Atticus shows bravery when accept the Robinson case and when defend Robinson during the trial against Bob Ewell and all the white community.

  7. 1. The part that i enjoyed the most was when the children were attempting to find who Boo Radley was, and the fantasy world that they created. They (Scout/Jem) created a strong bond with the mysterious Boo because he also rewarded the kids by leaving numerous gifts in the knot of a tree. Friendship is well represented by the kids and Boo.

2.Injustice---> It is clearly seen in the book. Racism against color people. Atticus urges and teaches his children to respect and sympathize with others no matter social condition, color, etc.

Education----> By the time Scout attends to school she is highly literate ahead the other children in the classroom. Also she frustrated her teacher because she (the teacher) had to teach her students according to a predetermined plan because the teaching techniques in that epoch were completely different from the ones we have today.

Bravery---->It is shown by Atticus when refusing to carry a gun to protect Tom Robinson from angry farmers. Also when Atticus takes Tom's case despite knowing that his town would turn against him and his children.

  8. I like the part when Atticus explained that to kill a mockingbird is a sin,Wheh Scott and Jem received guns for christmas and his father told them to practice their shooting with tin cans and if they have to kill living things, they must never shoot a mockingbird. It is a special part because it explains the name of the film and the central themes related to the crime of Tom Robinson and the innocence of Boo.
Themes... A)Injustice: it is shown throughout the movie and the book.it is clear that the parts that appear in the film and in the book are real, they are just examples of human acts and the cruelty of humanity obtaining the supremacy.
B)Education: It is shown in differents parts. One is revealed with Atticus teaching more than morality and values,he also teaches about life to his Children. The normal education system is not so effective for the kids because they learn from life, eventhough Atticus explains that they have to learn from school even when it seems to be frustrated, that is a system like society, in which they have to get inmmerse.
C)Bravery: It is shown in Atticus because he demonstrates it when he defends a man even when it could represent a great danger for his family. He mantains his pride and honor until the end.

  9. I liked the part when Boo Radley saved Jem and Scout from the bad man when they were coming back home and walking though the threes.

    Themes...
1.- Injustice... this was when whites were not agree with blacks in giving them a job similar like the ones whites had. Also, whites always were against blacks in any situation or problem, for example when Tom Robinson was accused even though he was not guilty.

2.- Education... Atticus as father always tried to teach the best for his children Jem and Scout. He sent them to school and he taught them how to read at their early ages.He taught them what he thought was good and right for them like not discriminating black people or not giving bad answers to older people.

3.- Bravery... it was demosntrated when Atticus took the case of Tom Robinson. Atticus never mind if others were agree or not. He was trying to help Tom and not sent him to jail. But it couln´t be possible.

  10. The part I liked the most is when Scout realized that Boo was not the scary man she thought. After Boo saved her brother, Scout stared at him and she discovered something. If Boo saved her brother, he must be someone with a good heart and feelings. Scout was a good girl and sentimental as well.

    2. Injustice: In the book said that Tom was blame of raping a white woman and dispite of the missing proves, they found him guilty. That was only because he was a black man against a white girl.

Education: Scout was frustuated about going to school because her teacher was applying a new methodology to teach reading. Scout didn´t find this method useful but inadequate to her. The teacher stupid by forcing her to follow the method she suggested that´s why she was not learning and wanted to quit school.

Bravery: In many parts of the book, it is prove that the children were brave in general. the old brother Jem was very brave because he was not afraid of following his curiosity and instincs. He went to follow Atticus to the jail, he used to go the house he was afraid of, he was devote the case of Tom Robinson.

  11. I like the part when, one day, Jem Wakes up and scream "Atticus it's the end of the world, do something", and Atticus tells him that it's just snowing, This part it's funny but innocent to.
Injustice--> Tom was accused to do something against a white woman and it's not true. It's unfair that when a white man has something against to a black one, the white man has always to win.

Education--> It's nice the way in which Atticus teaches his children to respect all the people: children, old people and black people. And in the school it's beginning a new educational current.

Bravery-->The children showed their bravery during all the the book in their adventures. But Atticus showed it when he decided to take the case of Robinson

  13. The part of the book that I liked the most was when Jem and Scout lost their fear of Boo because they noticed that Boo was a good man and not a phantom. Also, Boo helped the boys when they had the incident with Bob Ewell, Boo took Jem to home and Scout realized that he was Boo. In the book said that Scout named him as "Mr. Arthur". Until the end of the story, Scout could notice that Atticus was right because one time he said: “You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them” because she and Jem thought very bad things about Boo, but they have not thought about how he felt of being alone or why he behaved like that.
 Injustice: Because black people in Maycomb were discriminated just because their color and people thought that all black people were bad, also authorities did not care if they were applying the law or not, for them all black people were guilty.
Also, Maycomb had social status, and some families were treated as trash like the Cunninghams. As aunt Alexandra told the children not to talk with the Cunninghams because they were in a different social status.
 Education: Through the story, the education was necessarily involved since the perspective of the children. Atticus tried to teach moral lesson to Jem and Scout to show them that it is possible to live with conscience without losing hope or becoming cynical. This theme shows how children are educated and how they are taught to move from innocence to adulthood. At the end of the book, Scout even said that she has learned practically everything except algebra.
 Bravery: Atticus was brave to defend a black man in the face of criticism and threats of violence. He also was brave in the face of danger, both when he killed the rabid dog with a single shot and when facing the mob of men outside the jailhouse. Atticus urged Scout to be brave and prevent herself from fighting those who criticize her or her family; also the children are brave when they visited the Radley house.

  14. The part I liked the most was when Scout arrived to her house after walking Boo home and she had been thinking how god he was and she said to Atticus: he was really nice Atticus.. And he answered: almost everybody is, after you meet them. I think he was right because sometimes we judge people just for what we see or what we think about them but they can surprise us because once we meet people we will know that maybe we were wrong.
The tree major themes which are:
education: I think that for Atticus education was so important for his kids and we can see it in the first chapter when Jem announces to Dill that Scout has known how to read since she was a baby. Atticus reads to the children from newspapers and magazines as if they are adults who can understand issues at his level. Scout is so advanced and surprised the other children also her teacher who felt embarrassed.
INJUSTICE:We can clearly see it on Tom´s case. In the book we can see references to black men as "niggers". Black people occupy the lowest class level of Maycomb society as Maycomb's white population of every class waste no time reinforcing their rigid class rules.
BRAVERY:Jem also learned from his father regarding bravery. Atticus does not approve of guns. He believes that guns do not make men brave and that the children's fascination with guns is unfounded. We could see that he sends Jem to read for Mrs. Dubose who struggles to beat her morphine addiction before she dies. He wants to show his son one shows true bravery "when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (pag.121). Atticus also role models his sense of bravery by refusing to carry a gun to protect Tom Robinson from angry farmers and refusing to carry a gun to protect himself after Bob Ewell threatens guns.
